On Reading and Plots Summary

Eragon begins his reading instruction with Brom by starting at the beginning of the alphabet. Day after day, Brom teaches him the alphabet and then the letter sounds, and at night, he and Brom spar.

All during their stay in Teirm, reports continue to surface regarding more lost ships and the mysterious murders of wealthy people. While Brom and Jeod quietly discuss the events between themselves, they never do so when Eragon is present. After a week of learning, Eragon is able to read slowly, so Brom decides they are ready to seek the shipping information, but it will have be done in secret.
