Chapter 1, Whispers: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 Summary

Enigma by Robert Harris focuses on Tom Jericho, who is a mathematical genius and cryptologist specialist for British navy during World War II. Jericho has cracked the notorious Shark code used by the Germans to destroy British navy boats. However, the Germans change the code and it is up to Jericho to crack it once again.

In Part 1, Tom Jericho is in Cambridge, England. It is a boring town. He is called back to Cambridge University, his alma mater which he graduated from in 1935. He is a 26-year-old, British man. He stays at the university boarding house. The staff is curious about him, since Jericho is very secretive, hardly talks at all and will not let anyone touch his suitcases.
