Summary

These pages are part of Book One titled The Age of Florence. Lucy lives with her son, Edgar, in her mother-in-law’s house in Ferryfield, New Jersey. Lucy is now 34 years old but became a widow at age 27, when her husband, Frank, died. The story begins with Edgar watching his mother get ready for a date with an Italian butcher named Ron Salvatore, which Lucy coldly refers to only as Mr. S with her son. She leaves Edgar alone, instructing him to go to bed, but Edgar is bored and wanders around the house while his grandmother sleeps in her room.
