Death

Death is a theme throughout three of the four novellas in Different Seasons. In Apt Pupil, Todd Bowden is fascinated by the gruesome deaths of millions of people in the Holocaust. He blackmails Kurt Dussander to tell him about these deaths. The stories upset both so much that they both begin killing to stop their bad dreams. When their world begins to fall apart, both turn to death to get them out of it. Dussander kills himself when it is discovered he is a Nazi. Todd Bowden takes his shotgun and starts shooting people on a highway, where he is eventually shot down. The story shows that murder can only lead to more murder and that killing will not solve problems.
