The Secret Summary

As Eliza had imagined, it was a week before Miss Rose realized that she was gone. When Eliza didn't return from her friend's home, Miss Rose sent a messenger to inquire. The friend's mother paid her a visit and explained that they had not been at home and had not seen Eliza for many months. Rose was distraught and found her way to the home of Joaquin Andieta to confront his mother.

Rose's anger cooled, however, when she saw the abject poverty in which the woman lived. For some reason, her defenses fell away after so many years. She ended up telling this stranger the secrets of her life and failures. Rose vented all the rage that had been trapped under the guise of good breeding, while she drank tea with the mother of the boy who was in love with her adopted daughter.
