Power
Running through all the Star Wars stories is the great power of the Force. In Dark Force Rising it is examined closely in two ways. Luke Skywalker, a haphazardly-trained Jedi Master, has come to fear that using the power to control human minds could move him towards the Dark Side, which consumed his father, Darth Vader, and the Emperor Palpatine, so Luke restricts its use. Another Jedi Master, the aged Joruus C'baoth, claiming long ago to have done battle with the Dark Jedis, is intent on restoring the Jedi to their rightful place as judges of the galaxy, enjoyed for a thousand generations before the Dark Jedi virtually exterminated them. He is desperate enough to build a following to kidnap Leia Organa Solo, whose own abilities in the Force are limited by her other duties which precluded systematic training.
