Summary

Chapter 1, The Master – Simon Lewis goes to Veselka, a diner on New York’s Lower East Side, for coffee with his girlfriend Isabelle “Izzy” Lightwood, the child of an angel known as a Shadowhunter. Simon is now dressing more maturely, which his best friend, Clary, finds amusing. Simon wonders if Isabelle would be dating him if he wasn’t a vampire. Simon is also dating Maia Roberts, a werewolf. Neither girl knows about the other. Simon, on Clary’s advice, knows he must choose between Isabelle and Maia, especially since both girls will be at the upcoming wedding of Clary’s mother and Luke. Simon and Isabelle see two human subjugates enter the diner. They are essentially walking snack machines for vampires, Isabelle explains, who are slaves to the vampire whose blood they have been fed.
