Indonesia is where the novel opens. Harper is a middle-aged man who works for a black ops company. He was born in Indonesia in an internment camp during World War II. It is where his father is beheaded and where he returns after he joins the Institute. He is assigned to the region because of how his race will allow him to blend in to the region.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is where Anika takes Nicholaas after leaving her native country of Holland. It is where she meets and marries Michael and they have a child, Bud. Nicholaas is left in the care of Michael’s parents, Poppa and Nina. During Nicholaas’ time in Los Angeles, Poppa and Nina take him and Bud to a national park for vacation. They hike to a waterfall where Bud dies.
