John Harper/Nicolaas

John Harper is a black ops operative hiding in Indonesia, fearing for his life. He is a man of mixed race, part-Dutch, part-Indonesian. He was born in an internment camp during World War II, where his father was beheaded by the Japanese.

He spent part of his childhood in Los Angeles with the parents of his mother's new husband, Michael. John develops a close bond with Poppa, whom he considers his grandfather. He witnesses his younger brother's death while hiking in a national park with Poppa.

He joins the black ops organization as a young man. He is sent to Indonesia because of his skin color and having lived in Indonesia as a child.

Harper is comfortable being alone. He is surprised by the connected he makes with Rita. She is older and her body-type differs from the women he has been with in the past...
