Summary

Section 3 is titled “Black Water (1998).” Chapter 13 opens with Harper watching the sunrise from the hut. He thinks about being killed and how his body would be found in the hut and how he does not want Kadek to find his body. Rita approaches and thanks him for telling her about his childhood. He tells her that he did not throw the list in the canal and that he followed through on his mission to pass the list along. Rita asks Harper why he came back.

He thinks about his mother and why he did not tell Rita that Anika was still alive. He remembers visiting Anika a year earlier, finding her drunk and asking her if she remembered Bud.
