Chapter 8 Summary

As part of his offensive in the community, Mr. Slope pays a visit to Eleanor Bold and Susan Grantly. He flatters both women and leaves them with a positive impression of him. They share this opinion with their father, Dr. Harding, who is dismayed by their positive opinion of Mr. Slope.

Dr. Harding and the Archdeacon are both concerned with the appointment of the wardenship at Hiram's Hospital. Dr. Harding is very eager to regain the post and discusses his wishes with his family. The Archdeacon is also very interested in restoring Dr. Harding to the position. Both men are extremely confident about Harding's appointment and they act as though the matter is already decided.
