Summary

Chapter 1 was told from the first person point of view by a yet unnamed narrator. Since the narrator retold the story of a teenaged girl's rape, the chapter appeared in parts to be told from the third person limited point of view as he/she tried to reconstruct events surrounding the crime. The teenager, 15-year-old Jenny Kramer, was a respectful girl who was not unlike other teens who wanted to be considered pretty and popular. The narrator noted that Jenny was athletic and not self-centered like other teens. The narrator explained that a boy named Doug Hastings invited her to a party and she was so excited to go.
