Summary

Chapter 4.2 is narrated by Harold. Harold recalls when he was still married to Liesl. Not long after their son, Jacob, was born, he was diagnosed with a highly rare neurodegenerative disorder. Jacob died from the disorder, and Harold and Liesl divorced. Leading up to Harold’s adoption of Jude, Harold had a friend run a background check on Jude, but the check yielded no significant results. Harold marvels at how confident and confident Jude could be as a lawyer while also facing consistent adversity in terms of his mental/emotional health. After the Caleb incident, Harold tries to persuade Jude to press charges, but Jude refuses. Harold immediately brings Jude to see Andy, as Caleb has hurt Jude quite severely. Soon after, Harold finds the razors that Jude uses to cut himself. Harold urges Jude to stop self-harming, but Jude makes no such promise...
