Some people have been cloned from the same fertilized egg, so that they are genetically identical. The higher castes fill managerial roles, and a few of these become Controllers ruling over the World State. The lower castes fill menial roles. There are no parental or familial attachments. The idea of being born to a mother after developing in her womb is considered obscene and primitive. People are thus freed from the emotional conflicts of family life. Because everyone is conditioned to fill an assigned role, they all feel happy doing what they do, and there is no class conflict. There are many amusements to keep people happy, including the "feelies," movies that arouse audiences not only visually and audibly but also tactually. Sexual promiscuity is a social duty, and people derive recreational pleasure from having hundreds of sexual partners. Anyone who might feel a little anxious or sad takes the drug soma, which induces blissful euphoria and allows people to "escape from reality" for long periods without any painful aftereffects.
