The novel is primarily told from the first person point-of-view of a 30-year-old woman named Millie who is depressed, lonely, and working a mindless office temp job, hoping she will be offered a full-time position despite the fact that she does not actually want to work there.

Throughout the novel, the author also includes brief chapters from the perspectives of ancillary characters whose lives intersect with Millie's in some way. These perspectives are written in third person.
