The Prologue introduces Laurie Garvey, who is now a member of the “Guilty Remnant.” Laurie did not grow up religious and her children were raised agnostic. However, after the Sudden Departure, Laurie was depressed and drawn to the cult as a means to overcome her grief.

2. How would you describe the mood and tone of Mapleton in the beginning of Part One? What event is taking place?

There is a somber mood that has settled over the town of Mapleton since the Sudden Departure. On the day of the anniversary parade of the event, it becomes apparent that although they “celebrate” the anniversary, the people are still grieving over their losses even though the event occurred three years hence.
