Lesson 1 (from Prologue | Chapter 1)

Objective

In response to the attacks of 9/11, Bush tells Cheney in private that he wants to get rid of Saddam. Today's objective is to talk about the idea of having a solution in mind before taking the time to consider other options as well.

Lesson

1. Have each student discuss how they would define the idea a solution for a problem. What makes up a solution?

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they have ever made up their mind before thinking through a situation. Why or why not?

3. As a class, have the students discuss reasons why they think Bush would have made up his mind ahead of time. Why do you think others in the Cabinet did not try to talk him out of his plans? Why do you think Bush did not consider other options first?
