Character Descriptions
This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.
Characters
Birle - This character is the 14-year-old protagonist of the novel; she is a heroine in every sense of the word and she hates the drudgery of her life as the innkeeper's daughter.
Orien - This character has dark brown hair and eyebrows with eyelashes tipped with gold, and is accustomed to a life of ease in the castle.
Yul - This character is a giant man who does not speak much and is introduced on the pirate ship. He becomes a slave and is very attached to the main character.
