Homecoming (1) (The Tillerman Cycle) Overview

Homecoming, a young adult novel by Cynthia Voight, follows the lives of Dicey Tillerman and her three younger siblings – James, Maybeth, and Sammy. Their mother Liza leaves them in the car at a mall and never returns. Dicey, fearing they will be separated and placed in different foster homes if the police become involved, sets out to walk to the home of an aunt. That trip takes weeks. When it does not work out, the children continue their journey south to the home of a grandmother they have never met. Initially, Abigail refuses to consider keeping the children, but they all discover that the Tillermans belong together. The novel's main themes are the feeling of being home, the responsibilities of family members, and coming of age.
