Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Chapter 1

Edith was sent away at the urging of her friends. Students will analyze Edith's friendships based on the situation of Edith being sent away.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion - How do you feel about the idea that Edith's friends urged her to go away? Do you think that she has good friends based on the situation? Do you get the impression that Edith respects her friends?

2. Group Activity - Discuss the concept that Edith was driven to the airport by a friend that will only forgive her if Edith comes back and apologizes. How do you feel about this? Does this sound like a reasonable request?

3. Debate - Divide the students in half and have one half of the students argue that Edith's friends are good and have the other half argue that Edith's friends are no good for her.

4. Homework - Read Chapter 2.
