Nwibe remembers the madman from one time he caught him walking through the market naked. He whipped him in public and no doubt humiliated him.

Nwibe older and younger wife argue about the younger wife's dog. According to the younger wife, the older wife had hit the dog after the dog had poked his nose in the older wife's soup. The younger wife tells her it was completely unnecessary. All she had to do was to put a lid on the soup, and the whole situation would have been avoided.

3. Why does Nwibe run after the madmen?

When the madman appears, Nwibe is washing in the stream, after a hard day's work. He has waded into the stream naked, leaving the cloth that usually covers him on the bank. It is this cloth the madman steals, running towards the market. Nwibe chases after him.
