Objective

Chapters 1 through 3

Everlost deals with death and takes place in a world of the dead that exists parallel to the living world. The objective of this lesson is to examine the theme of death and how this novel approaches it.

Lesson

1) Writing: Have each student write a sentence that expresses an aspect of their personal experience of death: how they felt about the death of a pet, a grandparent, or a famous person, for example. Have students share their sentences, and discuss them as a class. Compare students' experiences to the experiences or understanding of death for the characters.

2) Class Discussion: As a class, read the first chapter of the novel. Ask students why the novel starts with these two characters' deaths. Why doesn't the author show more about the characters' lives before they die? Why is death so central to the novel?
