Objective

Chapter 1 Section 1

In this first chapter, the gunslinger and his mission are introduced.

The objective of this lesson is to understand how King wants to give the reader a clear image of the gunslinger as a man of purpose and authority.

Lesson

1) Reread the first paragraph of Chapter 1 during class. Discuss how King immediately reveals the protagonist and antagonist from the novel. Ask the students what they can determine about the characters from this one sentence paragraph.

2) Homework: Have the students write a two page paper about their analysis of the man in black and the gunslinger just from the first sentence of the novel. Have them describe the opinion they have of the characters, where they came from, and where they are going from this sentence.

3) During class, have the students write ten, one-sentence descriptions of two imaginary characters in a similar fashion to Stephen...
