House of Earth and Blood Overview

House of Earth and Blood is the first installment in Sarah J. Maas’ Crescent City high fantasy series. The novel follows Bryce Quinlan, a half-Fae, half-human party girl who becomes involved in a high-stakes murder case. She reluctantly teams up with Hunt Athalar, an infamous Fallen Angel called the Umbra Mortis, to investigate the demon killer. Together, they discover connections ranging from the city’s underground dealings to the political power system upon which their society is based. Maas explores the themes of institutional hierarchies, abuse of power, deviating from expectations, identification through group membership, and vendettas and revenge.
