Summary

Mungo masturbates Gallowgate so as not to arouse suspicion around St. Christopher’s absence. In the morning, however, Gallowgate finds the other tent empty. They search the area and eventually find St. Christopher’s body; Mungo feels his “heart [stutter]” (314).

Prior to the fight against the Catholic gang, Mungo spends time with his mother. Mo-Maw, already drunk, eventually invites another neighbor, Mr. Donnelly, into their apartment in order to drink his alcohol. Mr. Donnelly bribes Mungo to “take yersel to the pictures” (318). Mungo, however, forces Mr. Donnelly to leave. Mo-Maw accuses Mungo of “only [caring] about what ah can do for you” (320). Mungo then leaves to join the gathering gang of Protestant youths. They meet the Catholic gang at a bridge and violently brawl. “Everything went white” (326) for Mungo as a brick strikes him in the head. A young Catholic man brutally beats...
