The Lamina Lab, for Isaiah, and Middle School, for Hailey, symbolize the ability for the strong to oppress the weak because “might makes right” (207). Thus, the strong can behave as they like without ramifications.

Suburbia symbolizes sectors in society that values sameness as opposed to celebrating individuality. The portrayal of what happens in suburbia shows that just because something looks on the surface as though it conforms does not mean that it is not rotten underneath.
