Chapters 3-6 Summary and Analysis

In chapter 3, outside the school Mrs. Paley and her friends and neighbors participated in civil rights protests and urged the school district to bus black children into their schools. Mrs. Paley moved during this time and took a job at a private integrated school. Mrs. Paley was excited by the chance she was to have to teach a classroom that more accurately reflected the world outside the classroom. During the first few weeks at this new school, two things happened to open the issue of black children being taught by a white teacher for Mrs. Paley. First was a conversation with her own mother about when Mrs. Paley was a child attending public school where Mrs. Paley recalled being the only Jewish child, but her mother recalled that more than a third of the class was Jewish.
