Section 3: Promise;

Chapters 21-25

Eli goes to Laughing Gull to see Abra. Eli confronts Abra about not telling him about the gun. Abra does not understand why Eli is so upset; the police know it is not her gun and she can take care of herself. Eli says he knows that she can take care of herself but that she should know when she can lean on him.

“’I can’t get involved again with someone who won’t give as much as she takes, take as much as she gives. I found out, the hard way, if you do you end up empty-handed and bitter. I guess we both have to decide how much we can give, how much we can take.’” (Chap. 21, p. 256)
