Summary

Chapter 18 brings us back to the recently liberated Bergen-Belsen camp in 1945. Gerta and Lev quickly become close friends. She discovers that he is a religious man that was brought up to practice the Jewish faith with enthusiasm and love. Before the war he was a newspaper apprentice and now he joins efforts to start a newspaper at the displaced persons camp called Our Voice. Gerta notices an advertisement for a musical society on the camp and signs up. In Chapter 19, Gerta auditions for the new camp musical society and bumps into Roza from Theresiendstadt. She notices that Roza’s fingers have been broken and have healed badly but is determined to play the piano again.
