Sophie Stein

Sophie Stein is the main character and principal protagonist in the novel “What My Mother Doesn’t Know” by Sonya Sones. Sophie is a fourteen year-old freshman living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she lives with her mom and dad. Sophie is brown-haired and tall, and doesn’t always feel pretty. She is an incredible artist. While she is extremely close with her two best friends, Rachel and Grace, Sophie is not as close with her parents. She is currently dating Dylan, whom she grows more and more distant with over the course of the novel, until she breaks up with him. At the same time, Sophie is talking to a boy she met online named Chaz, while feeling sorry for Murphy, a lonely, skinny, but talented artist in class.
