Peter and Wendy was first published in 1904, and most incarnations of the story are set in the early 1900s. This poem would then take place roughly between 1915 and 1950. During this time, the speaker is subject to the gender expectations and constraints imposed on her by English upper class society. She is forced into social engagements and, it is implied, a marriage, in order to “avoid the innuendos” (Line 9). This means that she has very little agency and control over her path, which leads to the experiences which make up the poem.
