Summary

In the prologue, a black teenager is listening to music as he walks around Philadelphia. He hears running behind him. As he reaches for his phone to turn the music off, he gets shot by police officers. He thinks of his mother. His father was shot four years prior. He pictures the local news broadcaster, Riley Wilson, announcing his death.

Leroya “Riley” Wilson rushes to meet her best friend Jen for lunch in Chapter 1. Riley is black and Jen is white. Riley works for KYX Action News where her idol Candace Dyson works. On the way to lunch, Riley thinks about her sick grandmother Gigi. Jen receives Riley warmly. They chat about Gigi and about Jen’s pregnancy. Riley loaned Jen $5000 for the IVF that helped Jen get pregnant, but they never talk about it. Jen is married to a white cop...
