Summary

On the night that Wash and Titch depart the island, the year is 1832. There is a storm nearby, and the balloon becomes caught in it. The balloon falls towards the ocean and hits a moving ship. Wash and Titch manage to board the ship before the balloon falls into the water and sinks. The ship is called the Ave Maria. In Chapter 2, Wash and Titich meet the captain, a German-born Englishman named Benedikt Kinast. The ship is a merchant ship. Benedikt is angry at Titch and Wash but takes pity on them and sends them to the ship’s doctor. The doctor, Theo Kinast, is Benedikt’s twin brother. The ship is headed for Virginia, and Benedikt agrees to drop off Wash and Titch there. Titch is somewhat relieved, as a friend of his father’s lives in Virginia. It takes...
