Summary

Jagadish, a photographer claiming to have a “formula for paralysing Britain in India” (491), comes to see Sriram. Jagadish has a fiery personality and oily hair. He is in the midst of converting an abandoned temple into a fortress and base for his anti-British, anti-colonial activities. Jagadish says that he was once a devoted follower of Gandhi but realized he had to work in his own way. Alongside Jagadish, he transcribes news from the outside world through an illicit radio, including broadcasts by Subhas Chandra Bose, in which he calls for patriotic men to join the Indian National Army in an attack on the British enemy. Just as Chandra Bose is about to give his most important information, the radio cuts out. Jadadish and Sriram each blame one another.
