Drum Summary

Death is described as a dream that beats forever and calls life to itself.

Drum Analysis

This poem displays Hughes characteristic preoccupation with death. Note that death is not uniformly dreaded in Hughes' poetry. The drum may not be a joyful one, but neither is it mournful. Death is an irresistible force and an inescapable reality. The last two words of the poem are a drum-like representation of death's call.
