Summary
In Chapter VI, Mr. Pounds invites Winifred to join him for a walk. Winifred refers to “the Darkness” she can feel inside her and asks Mr. Pounds how he can be sure his children are his. However, he is not paying close attention to what she says, and she is able to convince him she said something else. The walks become a weekly occurrence, annoying Mrs. Pounds who questions why Mr. Pounds enjoys Winifred’s company. Mrs. Pounds also protests about Winifred eating meals with them, but Mr. Pounds insists it continues.
In Chapter VII, in the narration, Winifred recounts the moment she realized she did not feel fear. She was alone in the parsonage as a teenager when a man with rabies burst into the house and attacked her. She bit him and he fled.
