Summary

In Chapter 13, Maite visits Emilio. His home is elegant, with close-up photographs of body parts hung on the walls. Emilio tells Maite that Leonora had considered visiting a friend of his, a journalist, in order to share her compromising photographs. Emilio, himself a founder of Asterisk, expresses skepticism towards Jackie’s willingness “to kidnap businesspeople and rob banks” (136). He tells Maite that he and Leonora broke up because of her youth, and he agrees to call his journalist friend to ask about Leonora. As Maite returns to her apartment, a man steps out of a car and touches her arm.

Elvis and El Güero notice another group surveilling Maite’s apartment; Elvis suspects it is the DFS. They follow Maite to another address (Emilio’s home) and Elvis contemplates the “slightly lost and scared” (142) expression that he’d noticed in the photographs...
