Summary

In Chapter 34, Katie texts her mother early the next morning, asking her to come home. Katie has now come to realize that the connection she feels toward Mary has an explanation – they bonded when Katie was very young. Katie tells Caroline that they were worried and points out that she could have sent a text so they knew she was alright. She then shows her mother the photo. Katie says Mary has a “blue blank,” which was Jack's term for a large memory gap that was causing her heartache. Katie says Caroline has the ability to fill that gap, and that she should. Katie then gives Caroline the memory book she has compiled with instructions that she should begin at the back, in the part that is all about Katie's realizations about herself.
