Anna Halsey is looking for a man who can handle himself. She wants someone to pick up the slack on a job she took on, but is unable to do herself. She asks Philip Marlowe to smear a particular redhead who is a gambler's shill and has her hooks into a rich man's son. Marlowe asks who is involved and is given the name Marty Estel. He almost turns her down, but money has been tight and business slim, so he takes his chair again and tells her he wants two hundred and fifty dollars if he manages to complete the job, and twenty-five dollars per day in expense money besides.
