Still Life is a symbol of neglect. Clara’s portrait of the Virgin Mary is titled "Still Life." Clara imagines Mary had been forgotten after her son, Jesus, died and the over miracles stopped. Mary’s painting appears to be forgotten and neglected at Clara’s show. People walk past it without recognizing the painting as the Virgin Mary.
