Though other places are referred to in the poem, there is really only one setting: the bed-chamber or bedroom.. The bed-chamber is an intimate space, which was not usually pictured in literature or onstage in the period. Particularly for women, it was considered an entirely private place. It is unclear whether they are in his bedroom, her bedroom, or someone else's but it is made explicit that they are in a "soft bed," which is described as "love's hallowed temple" (18). Both literally and metaphorically, therefore, readers are told that this poem is set in a place intended for physical intimacy.
