Summary

“Amour” opens in a refugee camp in an unspecified location. The narrator is a refugee in the camp. One day, the narrator sees another refugee in the camp, whom she recognizes as Sophie, a friend from youth. Sophie had dated Ezra—another of the narrator’s friends—for years. Sophie and Ezra had grown up and met in New York City in the 1990s. They broke up shortly before the year 2000, but the narrator does not know why. After the breakup, the narrator tried to start dating Sophie, but then Sophie and Ezra resumed their relationship. Sophie had the outward appearance of serenity and propriety, while her private personality was much more subversive; Ezra was the inverse. Sophie and Ezra were both from devout Jewish families, some ancestors of which had died in the Holocaust.
