Narrator

The first person narrator remains unnamed throughout the novel. She is the novel’s main character. Shortly prior to the start of the novel, the narrator worked as a social worker. After burning out from the stress and anxiety of the job, the narrator decided to quit. She moved back in with her parents in order to recover and lived off of unemployment money. After her “unemployment insurance ran out,” she decided to find another job in order to fill her time (7). She soon developed a relationship with a job recruiter named Mrs. Masakado at the employment center, who found her a job at a surveillance agency.

During her time at the surveillance agency, the narrator’s regard for her work vacillates. The job is indeed easy, close to home, and situated at a desk. Although it satisfies the requirements she gave Mrs. Masakado, the narrator is depressed...
