Fall 1987 - Spring 1988, Chapter 7 Summary

A gang truce allows neighbors to gather and commune in a narrow parking lot behind the Rivers' building. LaJoe hangs out with her childhood friend Rochelle. Pharoah is with them as a teacher strike lingers for weeks. The teachers are demanding a pay raise and reduction of the number of students in the classroom. Their salaries are low and the board is proposing trimming three days a year to save money, which would reduce salaries even more. Pharoah loves school and can't wait to go back. It is a safe place where he can excel without fear. The summer has gone on too long already.
