Chapter 8 Summary

When the last child walked back to his seat, the audience clapped without enthusiasm. There were mutters and questioning whispers. The elder turned to the audience, acknowledging their discomfort. "I have caused you anxiety, I apologize to my community."

"We accept your apology," was the chorused reply. The Elder continued, "Jonas has not been assigned, he has been selected." The Elder went on to explain that Jonas had been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. She continues, referencing a mistake that was made ten years ago.
