Summary

In Chapter 30, Juno hears gunshots from Hems Corner. Scared something happened to Terry, she wonders why the police have yet to arrive. When the house gets quiet, she sneaks out. Dakota discovers her. She hides in a cupboard. She tries telling herself none of this is "her fault" (263). Fearing for Samuel, she rushes to his room. He is gone. Juno worries he overheard Terry and Winnie's conversation.

In Chapter 31, "Winnie," Winnie watches Dakota interact with Terry. Terry tells him everything, swearing that Winnie stole her grandson. Dakota believes Terry. Suddenly Winnie is terrified of her brother. Terry tells Dakota not to hurt Samuel. She will "take him and go" (269). Dakota gets emotional, sobbing that Nigel took his family, and Winnie let him. Then he shoots Terry. Winnie fears he will kill her too.
