Summary

The group drank alcohol while sitting at the table. Suddenly, the woman had an outburst and began to rant about her marriage. She mentioned her miscarriages and lamented her past. This turned into rambling, before she started to flirt with Jo. The child interrupted the conversation by showing the group drawings she made. The woman silenced the child.

As the night progressed, thunder and lightning crossed the sky. Jim asked the woman where her husband was once again, and the woman broke down in tears, saying that he had left her once again. The group continued drinking, and the woman started talking about how lonely she was. Eventually, the travelers convinced the child to show them her drawings, which were “repulsively vulgar” (67). In her excitement, the child told the group that she would draw something that her mother told her never to draw...
