Much of the poem takes place in an abstract location, absent any literal setting. However, the early part of the poem's action is set in a rock-covered seaside. It is here that the ship crashes, leaving the unfortunate lover orphaned. This dangerous setting continues to serve as a metaphor for his suffering, as the sea's saltiness is reflected in his tears and its fierce winds in his sighs of sorrow.
