Summary

In Chapter 22, “Saint Joseph,” Andrés’s trip home is his “longest stay” in 20 years (249). Though he returned for Henry’s funeral, he only stayed for “a couple of days” (249). The longer he is in town, the more trapped he feels. He is alienated, yet cannot distinguish between others and himself. He realizes he does not hate the place, but it makes him anxious. He wonders if his misery is due to his uselessness in the place (251).
