Summary

Chapter Sixteen opens on a Thursday, the first day that Daisy/Jade and Garth panhandled on a sidewalk. Garth compliments Daisy/Jade on the outfit she put together to look the part, and she replies snarkily, though admits to herself she was flirting with him. They sit in front of a bank, and after a while the Pearl Girls approach. One of them, a brunette, told her they can help, as there are “no homeless in Gilead” (261). Garth told them to not talk to Daisy/Jade, and the second Pearl Girl, a redhead, asked whether her whether he was abusing her. After Garth shouted a few expletives, the Pearl Girls gave Daisy/Jade a brochure, and they left, to which Garth explained that they “can’t make it too easy for them,” but that “they’ll be back” (262).
